I must say, it was quite tough selecting just one book to write our very first book review on. But I think we have a real winner with this one. Everyone, here’s our very first book review on the site: How Much Is Too Much? [previously published as How Much Is Enough?]: Raising Likeable, Responsible, Respectful Children–from Toddlers to Teens–in an Age of Overindulgence, by Jean Illsley Clarke.

How Much Is Too Much? [previously published as How Much Is Enough?]: Raising Likeable, Responsible, Respectful Children--from Toddlers to Teens--in an Age of Overindulgence

The world today has made abundance the norm. And for parents who want to give their kids the very best in life, it can be a slippery slope to overindulgence. In the end, the kids often end up with way more than they need and much more than they can handle, and this is a serious cause for concern.

How Much Is Enough offers an interesting take on this issue. Jean Illsley Clarke takes an in-depth look at the damaging effects of overindulgence and how it affects the growth and development of kids, describing the three different ways kids today get overindulged:

  • Giving them too much materially
  • Doing things for them that they can and should do for themselves
  • Not holding them accountable for their behavior

I know I’m guilty of at least one of these sins myself. I bet you are, too, considering how popular the ‘they’re-only-kids-once’ philosophy is, which encourages individuality and permissiveness.

As I read the book, I learned how to recognize my own parenting approach and to spot what could be potentially preventing my child from growing into a responsible, self-sufficient adult who doesn’t feel entitled to anything but strives to earn everything he has.

The book is packed full of realistic examples, smart advice, and effective strategies that you can use to adjust your parenting style and promote your child’s success later in life. I definitely have no regret reading this book, and I’ll always have it on my shelf as a reference resource.

I absolutely adore how Clarke addresses some of these areas, including:

  • The reasons why parents overindulge their kids
  • How to teach your child the concept of ‘enough’
  • How to establish fir rules (with tips!)
  • How to teach your kids responsibility and independence

This is why I believe that this book is a definite must-read for all parents who are trying to raise their kids to be self-sufficient adults without overindulging them while they are young.
